I have been puzzled by my ability to remember my childhood, despite the fact that most of the molecules in my body today are not the same ones I had as a child¦in particular, the molecules that make up my brain are constantly turning over, being replaced with newly minted molecules. Perhaps memories only seem to be stable. Rehearsal strengthens memories, and can even alter them. Three Iraqi Army battalions had surrounded the town of Madaen, just south of the capital, where Sunni kidnappers were said to be threatening to kill hundreds of Shiite hostages unless all Shiites left the town. As the national assembly met, Iraq's top political figures warned of a grave sectarian crisis. (...) But as the army battalions arrived in Madaen, they saw streets full of people calmly sipping tea in cafés and going about their business. There were no armed Sunni mobs, no cowering Shiite victims. After hours of careful searches, the soldiers assisted by air surveillance found no evidence of any kidnappings or refugees at all. The people in the town come from the local "Ashayir" or tribes. It's one of those places where everyone knows everyone else- even if only by name or family name. The tribes who dominate the town are a combination of Sunni and Shia. Any conflicts between the townspeople are more of the tribal or family type than they are religious. The whole concept of a large number of Sunni guerrillas raiding the town and taking 60 – 150 of its members (including women and children) was bizarre, frightening and by the second day of the rumor, a little bit suspicious.

Sen har jag personligen lagt märke till (och här kan det ju förstås vara tidningarna som är snedvridna) att när Expressen och Aftonbladet jagar upp sig över någon som påstås ha blivit drogad och våldtagen, så visar det sig oftast att det inte var så - annat än med vår legala, fantastiska, underbara superdrog alkohol.

+ Det här tycker jag var mycket tråkigt att läsa: En del av den berömda månghundraåriga Malwiyya-minareten i Samarra i sunnitriangeln sprängdes av rebeller på fredagen, rapporterade polis enligt AFP. Den mäktiga minareten är formad som en spiral. Den fullbordades 850 e Kr av den islamiska abbasid-dynastin. (bild här) Tydligen användes minareten av amerikanska krypskyttar, och det är nog därför den sprängdes, men all vandalism mot historiska platser i Irak är ändå tråkigt att höra om.
